With tight security in place, Solidere - the Hariri run construction company - is rapidly demolishing all that remains of Beirut's Heritage in Wadi Abu Jamil. The only building that still stands is the Magen Abraham Synagogue - but for how long?

Magen Abraham Synagogue is the main and largest synagogue of the Jewish community of Beirut (inaugurated in 1926).

It was a major communal institution.

the first Lebanese to take part in La Patrouille des Glaciers (Switzerland)

We seem to be the center of attraction at La Patrouille des Glaciers (PDG) since it is the 1st time Lebanon takes part... And because we organised a Patrouille des Cedres... Just now on the news they spoke about the PDG, and that several countries are taking part, of which... Le Liban! (rfa3o raskon ya Libneniye!)

Today the local newspaper, tomorrow, it’s another local newspaper...

... and everyone wants to come to the next PDC...

Hizbullah Surrounds Police & Frees 2 Detainees

Hizbullah freed two detainees after they were apprehended by police for having no identity cards on them.
note: the law does not permit the police to detain someone for simply not having his/her identity card

The two men were stopped at the security checkpoint around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Qmatiyeh village near the mountain resort town of Aley, east of Beirut.

One of the cyclists made a cell phone call and shortly afterwards about 100 Hizbullah members surrounded the police and freed the two men.

Labor Union Threatens Strike on May 7 if Minimum Wage is not Raised

The General Federation of Labor Unions (GFLU) has threatened to go on strike May 7 if the minimum wage is not raised.

The current minimum wage has been 300,000 LL (200 USD) since the mid 1990s.
The government has offered to increase this to 450,000 LL (300 USD).
The labor unions are seeking an increase to 960,000 LL (640 USD).

Adjusted for inflation, the 200 USD minimum wage of the 90s should be over 500 USD today.

In other words, the poor are getting poorer, and will still be poorer with the 100 USD increase offered by the government.

لا يزال التفاوض قائماً بين مجموعتي «هرميس» المصرية و«عودة ــ سرادار» اللبنانية على شكل الصفقة التي بموجبها ستتملّك المجموعة المصرية مجموعة بنك عودة أو تتكتّل معها أو تندمجان... لكن هذا الأمر متوقف، بحسب مصادر موثوق بها، على موقف مصرف لبنان الذي يبدي تحفظات «غير ثانوية» على هذه العملية، انطلاقاً من تبنّيه مبدأً عاماً يعارض أي عملية لبيع أي مصرف لبناني كبير يمتلك حصصاً مهمّة من السوق لجهة أجنبية، لأن مخاطر مثل هذه العمليات كبيرة على السياسات النقدية والمالية المتّبعة.
وفيما أكدت مديرة علاقات المستثمرين في «هيرمس» دينا السنباطي لـ«الأخبار» أنه لم يتّضح بعد «الشكل النهائي للصفقة مع بنك عودة، فهي قد تكون عملية دمج كامل أو استحواذ (شراء أكثر من 51 في المئة من أسهم عودة)، أو تبادل الأسهم بين المجموعتين»، قالت المصادر إن مصرف لبنان غير موافق مبدئياً على بيع مؤسسات مصرفية كبرى لمجموعات مالية خارجية لأن هذا الامر يمثّل «ضغطاً محتملاً» على الاستقرار النقدي، وعلى الدين العام وتركيبة السوق المالية بكاملها.
وأشارت المصادر إلى أن حاكم مصرف لبنان رياض سلامة يحاول أن يجد المخرج المناسب و«المقبول» الذي يسمح بإنجاز عملية بيع «عودة» لـ«هيرمس»، وذلك عبر صيغ متعددة لم يتبلور أيّ منها بعد، معتبرةً أن موقف مصرف لبنان المبدئي برفض بيع المصارف اللبنانية منطلق من أولوية الحفاظ على الاستقرار النقدي، إذ إن بيع أي من المصارف الكبرى يسمح للمؤسسة الجديدة بالمشاركة في القرارات النقدية الوطنية التي غالباً ما يضعها مصرف لبنان مع المصارف «بالتراضي». وقد يسعى الشريك الجديد إلى الضغط على مصرف لبنان لوضع صيغ تعاون مختلفة، وخصوصاً في ما يتصل بالإجراءات والتدابير التي يفرضها مصرف لبنان على المصارف عندما يتعلق الأمر بالاستقرار النقدي، فهو يحاول تجنّب أي «ثورة» على المسالك المعمول بها بين المصارف ومصرف لبنان، إذ قد يزول أيضاً الهامش الذي يتحكم فيه في ما يتعلق بالتسليفات والقروض المصرفية وسعر الفائدة والكثير من الأمور المهمّة في السوق المالية.
ويضاف إلى هذا الأمر أن المصارف الكبرى في لبنان تستحوذ على حصة كبيرة نسبياً من الدين العام، إذ إن حصتها من الدين العام تبلغ 54 في المئة من مجمل الدين، أو ما قيمته 32423 مليار ليرة، منها سندات خزينة بالليرة بقيمة 15664 مليار ليرة وسندات خزينة بالدولار بقيمة 16696 مليار ليرة. وبحسب الميزانية المنشورة على الموقع الإلكتروني لبنك عودة وغير المدققة، فإن قيمة ما اكتتب به المصرف من سندات بالليرة والدولار تبلغ 4023 مليار ليرة، أي إن حصة بنك عودة من مجمل دين المصارف على الدولة تبلغ 12.43 في المئة، و6.9 في المئة من مجمل الدين العام.
وكانت مجموعتا «عودة سرادار» اللبنانية و«هرميس» المصرية قد لحظتا في بيانيهما السابقين أن تجميعهما في مؤسسة واحدة سيحتاج إلى «موافقة المساهمين والهيئات الناظمة، ومن بينها موافقة مصرف لبنان». وتملك «هرميس» ٢٨٫٤٥ في المئة من بنك عودة، وتُعدّ مجموعة دبي المالية أكبر حامل أسهم في «هرميس».

The BBC World Service Poll has been tracking opinions about country influence in the world since 2005. These latest results are based on 17,457 in-home or telephone interviews conducted across a total of 34 countries (including Lebanon) by the international polling firm GlobeScan together with the Program on International Policy Attitudes (PIPA) at the University of Maryland. GlobeScan coordinated fieldwork between October 31, 2007 and January 25, 2008.

People were asked to rate Brazil, Britain, China, France, Germany, India, Iran, Israel, Japan, North Korea, Pakistan, Russia, the USA and the European Union, as having a mainly positive or negative influence in the world.
