Charlotte from Canada, a reader of BloggingBeirut, came to make this statement: I really love this blog. Keep up the excellent job. I am aligned with the opposition and applaud the efforts of the lebanese people that have been camped out. However, what I don't like to see and I am sure it can be helped............(from the video) all the garbage or litter on the streets left behind. I think that the ground of lebanon should be kept clean. Why can't they set up places for people to put their litter and encourage this. I really dont understand how one would want to throw dirt on their country. There is enough corrupt government in lebanon..............why do we have to litter tooo? Anyone help me out here. Would anyone care to answer Charelotte's Question? I, for the life of me, haven't been able to make sense of the poor and the rich alike, discarding their Almaza bottles, their Bliss House papers, their Uncle Deek cups wherever they happen to be at the end of the meal/drink. 3al Raouche, 3al Marina, 3al trotoire, bil hadeeka, bil hirish, bil bahar... I personally cannot tolerate when people throw out garbage from their car window :S And I think it's a serious problem which Lebanon hasn't been able to solve. Simple, we need awareness ads on TVs and billboards instead of the "I love life" and "I love life more" propaganda!
Even the poor in Lebanon are not as poor as some in this world...
I visited Viet Nam in '81, as the fiance of an exile, and NOTHING was thrown away, even in my fiance's "well off" household. The head of the Women's Union in Nha Trang went from from house to house collecting kitchen garbage. She had an oil drum on a hand cart, and we dumped our scraps into it. When filled, she dragged to the fledgling co-operative on the edge of town, where it was used to feed the pigs. The pigs were fat and the streets were clean. Toilet paper was old newspaper, and old government paperwork. Fast street food came wrapped in Marxist propaganda-East German printouts of the Communist Manifesto in Vietnamese, donated by the ton to the "revolutionary Vietnamese people"... who, very sensibly, used it to wrap stir-fried fish...the fish tasted like heaven, even with with the cheap ink on my fingers... When my fiance wanted to box up our souvenirs, he was directed to a household in Ha Noi (three generations, about fifteen people) who made their entire living by going to the airport and grabbing the boxes ripped-open and discarded by the customs officials... They very carefully brought that stuff home, and with scissors and intelligence, crafted boxes for whoever needed one.... It's a pity that I, as a human being, an American and a foolish old woman, cannot talk about my "trip" to Viet Nam to any living soul...what I saw, what I felt, doesn't meet anybody's expectations. Didn't then, doesn't now. The Vietnamese have forged ahead, gotten richer, and now they do throw stuff away... Not from car windows. Not yet. And you Charlotte in Canada are for "the opposition"? Meaning Hezbollah? And your only problem with them is that they toss their coffee cups away....
I'm in complete agreement Charlotte. I've been visiting relatives in Lebanon for the last 3 years, and after my first visit, I was as incredulous as you were over this. I will say that the men working for Sukleen were always on the job, but the citizens threw garbage and litter anywhere and anytime as far as I could tell. The impression I came away with was that those living there had an attitude of "it's not my problem, someone else will take care of this"
To walk along a beautiful beachfront in beirut and to see bottles, chairs, etc. floating by was very disheartening. How can we as lebanese people really expect to confront and resolve big problems within the country, when we are not obviously handling the small ones? Add Comment
