After Hurricane Katrina on our Gulf Coast, I was located 5 hours away, yet it affected me so much that it was everything I could do to function. Everyone in my area felt for the people and did what we could in our capacity to help others affected in our country. How many of the young adults partying are actually feeling affected by the situation of their fellow Lebanese, even though majority Muslim affected? I am curious as Lebanon is only 60 miles at its widest. Are these young people helping and feeling for those innocent affected?. If not, I strongly suggest extending your heart and your hand if you wish to find true unity amongst the different sects. Just curious from accross the world.
I would say all are feeling it ! The reason t5hey can party and you could not is as like as not due to a couple of factors .
1 they have a country which has known war all too often . You in USA no simply nothing . Why should they go under ?
2 They are aware their government will do all it can to help . Hey did yours ? No it is too busy spending mega sums on weapons to destroy oither lands . Bush and Co dont care two toots for the American people. No wonder you couldnt party You were as a nation alone ,With merely the TV propaganda
3) by the way are you folk from america so free to use the word Muslim . these people are Lebanese first and foremost . or has Fox ( controlled news ) ntaught you different ?
Helena, Beleive me I am on your side on this and about my country!!!! As American, I know all too well the media does not portray the truth and I am one who contacts my congress and president with facts and disagreements supporting Isreal. In fact, the reason I wrote the comment is because my husbands family is Shiite Muslim in Dahiya whose homes were destroyed and they were not supporters of Hezbollah. The picture reflects something that I was curious about. No my government did nothing after Katrina, yet too many of our youth in America mobilized to raise money and made trips to the Gulf Coast to help. Many Lebanese youth are helping in Lebanon, believe me that is why I respect the Lebanese. What does concern me is a sect of attitude(which was broadcast and spoken by youth at cafes) that this is not their problem. Why not think of it this way, if those who think this way understand it would be good to extend a hand
Why are you assuming they arent helping? Its an arrogant supposition at best and a tad ignorant as well.
Perhaps letting off a little steam is all that it amounts to for the Lebanese? I know that the European countries as well as North America...celebrated a great deal after the World Wars. I guess its one of those..."damned if you do...and damned if you do things". I also wish folks would think about what they are typing before they do it. I have seen wonderful things posted here in the last few weeks...but I have seen some pretty harsh and uneducated crap as well.
dear martha and everybody who are wondering like martha...
the basement was closed during the war (even though a lot of other venues were open) and i refused to open it while other people were getting killed a couple of miles away... so that you know...
the problem with the media and people like you is that you don't try to get all the info before criticizing or giving an opinion in general....
please read the points below, it'll give a wider angle to the matter... no politics or religion involved cause i personally don't beleive in any of the 2. just from a humane point of view...
1) basement opened a week after cease fire
2) basement people are involved in a group called MOWATINUN, check www.mowatinun.com, so u know more about what they do
3) on of the things we did is oragnize a party called minimal resistance and launch a
CD, and we gathered 5,000 USD for charity (www.minimalresistance.org)
if any of you would like to support, the CD is being sold at CD-THEQUE and at THE BASEMENT..
3) 30 employees at the basement need to work, 16 live in da7yeh and are supporting their famillies
4) life goes on my friend
5) it's so easy to 'nazzer' (can somebody explain this word ?) when you live abroad.... maybe if you stayed 35 days at home with no electricity, no life, no work, no activities all the time and no fuel, then you'd like to get on with your life after a while
6) maybe after living 5 wars (if you're born in 1977 like i did) then we don't really give a f*** anymore and once a war is over we'd like to breathe
7) of course all this taking into consideration that we are always helping with mowatinun and working on fund raising and re-construction events
8) if you are away and you are in pain because you can't be here with us and wished you are here with us now, assuming you were here of course you wouldn't go out (to basement or any other place)... then how about you send donations ? a
nd if you don't have money, how about you boycott those assholes that inflicted all that pain on the people you love or you care about, or are you just criticizing and wondering in general ? cause... this is no 'hurricane Katrina bullshit' babe... this is real terror and there's someone behind it. instead of criticizing the people who need to 'LIVE' because they didn't 'evacuate' or run away because they don't have another 'passport' or maybe 'means' to be abroad, to live the american dream, instead of all that, let's focus on the cause. this is september 11 happening every day, and it's been going on for years but no one is promoting it.
Then again, this is not Beirut Rising at all... and i wouldn't be proud of a Beirut Rising with some drinks and techno music, there's much more happening behind the Rising of Beirut... i would say this is Beirut coming up for air.
yeah, i've wondered the same thing too. but on the other hand, people shouldn't punish themselves... so i guess ideally you need some sort of balance. show solidarity, yet keep living.
its not that they arent affected. its that people need to understand the mentality of the LEBANESE...we as a people love to have fun. we party more than anyone else. we did not ask for this war it was brought to us and we were extremely affected. but now that its over we lebanese LOVE TO PARTY and want to get back to our normal lives and rebuild our country and boost our economy. that is why we are out partying moving back to our homes which are mainly destroyed. the people on the gulf coast took months to get life started again and in most places it is still a gost town. but in lebanon we LOVE LIFE and most of all LOVE NIGHT LIFE and want to get out and see our friends and party like there is no tomorrow. it is not that we do not care about the people affected. we do and we help them more than anyone else. but at the same time we want to get on with our lives so please do not criticize us for that
Been to Beirut once, and yes the Lebanese people surely love life! It makes me happy to see the fantastic pictures of young Lebanese men and women rising once again, which you´ve done sooo many times before!! The Lebanese people really are amazing in my eyes!!
Keep partying, I wish you the very best of luck and hopefully I´ll visit Beirut again in the not too distant future!
It's not because you refuse to make a war (you didn't ask for) get you down and you like to party at night that you don't do anything more constructive during the day, is it?
I mean, you could as well start weeping and mourning all the deaths... but isn't trying to get on with life the better way?
What crazy critical comments. Every blog shows how Lebanese are helping each other with money, water, transport, digging through rubble, getting food. To say that young people ignore those in the South is nonsense. Have a look at Finkployd's earlier videos of youngsters going in to process the Saudi food shipment. I wonder if we'd see so many great, active, helpful young people in the West if we went through something similar? Seems to me that youngsters in the West may care, but do NOTHING.
As for Hezbollah being the common enemy. What a joke. From a country that has twice invaded Lebanon and shows scant regard for human life or international law (or the current ceasefire.) Hezbollah are down there arranging water, giving money and helping people. Whereas we have the shame of the Simon Wiesentahl centre arguing in Sweden that they are being anti semitic because they focus on the humanitarian need in Lebanon and don't include Israel.
I am speechless. The lies and hatred that pour out of that country. Narrow land and many narrow minds. God bless the peaceniks and those who work peacefully and constructively with Arabs and Palestinians in Israel.
OK Lebanon - party on. You are an inspiration to us.
Hezbollah may not be your cup of tea . Why do they import missiles ? Well for an answer look at what Israel has and imports from USA . You call it defence there and terrorism for Lebanon . What dual standards . When all scrap weapons great . Beginning with say USA that multi billion maker of evil .That also just so happens to finance Israel with a lot , yes a very lot of money each year ( oh yes and always provides a veto )
Oh dear Matti, you're falling for the same old rhetoric.
We say 'handsome is as handsome does.' Israel has bombed the crap out of Lebanon. Politicos may make polite noises about just targetting Hezbollah, but that is not the reality. War crimes plain and simple.
aiii no WAY... we thought of going last night after monot but they didn't answer the phone, i even tried to call ahmed directly and he didn't answer either. so we assumed it was closed!!
martha, tell me-- how long after katrina did you keep your life on hold? had you still not gone out for a drink, or gone to the movies, or [insert martha's idea of a good time] nearly six weeks after the hurricane hit?
after katrina, i might add, people -- especially locals -- made a point of trying to go out and recapture the new orleans spirit, to prove their city hadn't died. when news agencies covered that one bar in the french quarter that wouldn't close, it was portrayed as a symbol of strength and defiance, not indifference.
we care a LOT... and pretty much everyone is helping out however they can. but we are trying our best not to let our city die, either. so lose the self righteousness.
This is our Beirut rising again like the Phoenix from the ashes as never before!
All what I can say is that anyone has to look at the whole truth and the reasoning behind it before making any judgments…
We, as Lebanese Citizens wherever we might be will have to unite facing the Israeli storm intending to destroy our land. We will have to survive together as ONE and continue as such after the sun is rising again across the horizon. Our hearts will always smile with Solidarity, Integrity and above all Love for one another!
ALL for ONE and ONE for ALL in a ONE LEBANON
Thanks FinkPloyd for the photos they are simply great...
ToeKnee, you are crazy!! I hope that you're really just ignorant and not a traitor. To Tony and all the Israel apologists, I say open your eyes. Israel still occupies Lebanese land (Shebaa farms) and holds hundreds of Lebanese prisoners, most kidnapped and who have yet to see a trial. Hezballah is the Lebanese resistance, well organized and God fearing. God bless them and all Lebanese who stand up in unity to denounce Israeli war crimes.
