Heavy machinery working rubble in the Roueiss district of Bourj el Barajna, in the southern Suburbs of Beirut. There is still fire in the wrecked building but the engines left to extinguish another fire in Beer el Abd shortly before this picture was taken.
This and subsequent photographs taken August 14th, the first day of the cease-fire.

The corpse of a boy uncovered in the rubble is held up by a crew of medical workers and volunteers. The building was destroyed the day before; the body has not yet begun to decompose.
Onlookers in Roueiss
Three still-intact storeys of a building that collapsed into an underground parking garage or basement near the Sayid Shuhada mujamma. Virtually all of the buildings surrounding the Sayid Shuhada centre were destroyed.
The same building from another angle. Lebanese tri-colours and the yellow Hizballah flag have been placed on the high points of the rubble of many of the destroyed buildings in the suburbs. Only the Lebanese flags appear in colour here. The dark flags flying on the right are Hizballah colours.
Photo of a boy who was posing for his father. The father photographed him with a cell phone.
Burnt inventory from a stationery shop. The day-planners, in particular, were still usable, but no opportunistic students appeared to have made off with them.
A shop owner in Haret Hreik cleaning the broken glass. He had a fearful emotion in his face and stabbed violently at the glass with his broom, sending shards flying in our direction and forcing us to move back moments after the photo was taken.
