So this is what we're used to seeing on a summer night in Beirut. People dressed to the maximum. Beautiful men and women, dressed up, out to have a good time, talking, laughing, bitching, whatever, the usual. The mood is light, people are excited, everyone is on their way to Monot (pronouned moNO), a top club and pub area in the heart of Beirut. Shimmering dresses, slicked back hair, Hollywood fashioned nails, beautifully shaped eyerows, smart shirts, winks and smiles, giggles and laughs, shits and giggles shall we say, rhythmic beats in the air, chill music, rap music, arabic music, sparkles and lights, fancy new cars covering every inch of the little cobbled streets, traffic to end all traffic - Lebanese style, people cruising, guys looking important, saying hi left and right. Picture it. Read it again, and picture it. This is a typical summer night in Beirut, party central. It is bubbling with life. It's alive.
How can I express to you what it is like now? It's difficult to understand. It's a shock to the sytem, seeing Beirut completely deserted. It is desolate and deserted. Not a single person is on the streets. Not a car in sight, not even a parked car. Occasionally, you'll see some military trucks going by with soldiers chilling in the back. But that's about it. Everyone's left to find refuge in the relatively safer towns in the mountains. It's depressing is what it is. You wouldn't recognise it. It's dead.
Take the town you live in. Imagine the hot spots, where people usually go to party and chill and just have fun. Imagine it effervescing with life, people all dressed up, without any cares, just out to have a good time. Take your chosen spot which you know and have always known to be full of life - and imagine it completely shut down, with no people, no music, no crowds, no drinks, no cars, no voices, no laughs, no nothing. If you're having a tough time imagining it, then you might get a taste of what it's like for us here to see it actually happening. It's pretty depressing, that's it.
