We wouldn't have been able to survive through all the previous wars if we weren't life loving to this point. Nothing can break the Lebanese will to survive, or to go out and have a "couple" of drinks on a saturday night :-)
It looks like "cheers" is pretty full. Finkployd, say hi to gus for me. tell him to keep singing.
The human spirit prevails...despite turmoil, despite anguish, despite war...ridiculously negligent or perhaps conspiciously blithe? Which personifies the Lebanese people at such times? I truly do not have an answer, let the images speak for themselves... On a personal note, since it is my birthland - I am moved. Simply moved. May we strive to be humane - no matter what! And may right (whatever its destined to be) triumph for all of mankind in the end.
As an American I am getting sick and tired of the welfare state that is Israel. I am sick of my tax dollars being wasted on their terrorist activities. The United States wants to act like Israel is above any other extremist group with comments like "they have a right to defend themselves". They do have a right to defend themselves, but they don't have a right to march on an entire country of innocent people because of a few extremists. Israel makes me sick, using children to write on bombs that will be dropped is as low as it gets.
Jen, i agree with you. I am not an adult but a teen of lebanese decent living in america. I feel like my parents tax dollars are being used for Israel to destroy beutiful lebanon. You are right also about them using their children to right on the missles that are taking inocent peoples livels in lebanon. What they are doing is very sick and disgusting. I dont see what could posess people to destroy such a beutifull country. Israel is only jealous of Lebanons mountains and its beutiful cities and coastlines. I wish they could live in peace but I guess that the Israelis just dont want that. I have family in lebanon, and I pray that they get home safely. I also pray for eveyone in Lebanon, and that all they have accomplished is not destroyed by israel.
Hey. CNN mentioned your blog so I thought I'd have a look. I haven't looked much but your pictures are awesome. Sometimes heartbreaking, disturbing, heartwarming. Shows Lebanon what many of the media don't show.
I didn't know that CNN mentioned your blog. However, I have been pretty enamored by Lebanon blogs in the past two weeks and after googling it...you popped up. I am not even sure how to begin this email. As I said, for the last two weeks I have enveloped myself in Lebanese blogs and the life of bloggers there. I have been blogging for three years now and believe in the voice of regular people. My heart is with each person involved in this conflict. In the US we only know what we see through media and other outlets. People like me, however, want to hear the voices of life that is still being lived each day in Lebanon. Your pictures are amazing and speak to the spirit of the people involved in this conflict. We all want to again know there is laughter and love and compassion and outrage and all sorts of emotion coming from the people there. And with your pictures, I think we are getting that. I would love to hear what is going on. I would love to hear those raw emotions. It so happens that I also work with a website called Evoca. We help bring audio to the web. You can check it out at www.evoca.com. We would love to give you a free PRO account to record for your blog anything you want. You can make recordings using Skype, your cell phone, your PC mic, an MP3 recorder, etc. We can even help you start a Podcast by offering you an RSS. The player is easy to embed right into you blogsite. You can see it in use on my blog if you visit "About Us". Please feel free to contact me at drew@drewandbritt.org if you want this account and you want to empower your voice on this blog and in the world at large. Thank you for reading my comment and blessings to you.......
That was me a few years ago!! I was in my teens, and it was the eighties (okay, I am aging myself now!! Note to self, post as anonymous!!)
My friends and I, drinking, dancing, enjoying our mezze :-). We wouldn't let anyone stifle our spirits then, don't let the Israelis stifle the souls' of Lebanon's future today. In your faces!!
This too shall pass, you too will survive!
I love us. and by us, i mean the lebanese people. only in lebanon will there be a very obvious, very advertised imminent land attack on our country (its on the front page of Yahoo! for god's sake) and we will be out living it up. we really know how to live. if we didn't, our state would have been destroyed, destroyed again, and destroyed a third time. Thanks for this refreshing look at lebanese life.
God blessed you with Bush the carpetbagger, before he's out of office he'll sell you out and give you back to Mexico. I'd rather have their government than the near police state your boy's running.
Hizballah rhetoric.....Like the majority of the country, I think Bush is doing a crappy job. I didn't think anyone could destroy a decent country in such a few short years. You think that's Hizballah rheoric? Good luck selling that. You must have gone to the Karl Rove School of Spin.
It sounds like you got all your "facts" from CNN about the airport and anntenna. If not, just enlighten me and tell us how you know this information? You have NO CLUE... you don't even know who Carl Rove is... this is the guy by the way that runs our country.. USA... Bush is just the idiot with the popular last name. So there... now you know something. You are no longer 100% ignorent... now you are 99.9%.
Okay, at this point, I think we are all, or most of us, are "Sik" (by the way it is spelled sick) of you so go to back to your home (under the rock).
You title yourself "sik of being lebanese" . I bet you 50 grand you aint even Lebanese, cause if you were, you would have titled yourself something like, "glad Im lebanese" or "proud to be lebanese" or something like that. But if I am wrong and you really are Lebanese, then you have given up and betrayed your people.
Hey look. I agree with you that Hezbollah is a large part of the problem, but there is two sides to them. One bombs and kills innocent people, while the other provides schools and hospitals for people. But that is beside the point. I am NOT for Hezbollah. But you saying how glad you are that this is all happening is not right. I dont live in Lebanon, I am a Christian living in America. Children dying is not a good thing, it is evil. My family is in Lebanon, and I am praying that they are safe. you said that you were "happy that this is happening". Do you feel any pain at all that innocent people are being murdered. They didn't do anything to hurt you or anyone else. They are just people trying to live, (survive) and make the best of life. But you are glad that they are dying? And also, you said that they did nothing to prevent it? What could they do to prevent this. Lebanon just got out of a war that destroyed them 15 years ago. They didnt have the chance to build up the strength to protect them. They were completely defenseless. Lebanon is such a beautifull country. Its mountains and cities are one of a kind. Rethink what you are saying. Inoocent people dont deserve to die...
From DJ
(P.S. I still dont think you are really Lebanese)
To sik of being Lebanese.
Yes you may be right about what you said ( about
the hospitals and schools and so forth). But surely
not everyone in the Iranian, Syrian, Hezbollah areas
that are being destroyed are not all for Hezbollah
It cant possibly be that everyone in the Bekka Valley
region, in the south and in southern Beirut is for
Hezbollah. Im sure a lot of the people in those areas
may even be people who disagree with Hezbollah, but
just try to live a normal life and not worry about it. I still
want you to know that I am not for Hezbollah at all. I
belive in peace for all, and I think that if Hezbollah was
not there, all the problems that are being faced now would
not be happening.
But the reason I responded to your first comment above was
because you titled yourself "sik of being Lebanese". DO
you feel that because you are lebanese, you should support
Hezbollah, even though you dont want to. From what I
understand, (from american news media) under 35% of
the Lebanese population supports Hezbollah. So that gives
the right to have a whole countries infrastructure and economy
destroyed. Dont get me wrong, i would like to see everyone
live happily together, and if it means the destruction of the
economy of a country for a few years would equal peace
between it and another country for 1000 years. Then I am fine
with that. But on one of the comments you posted above (14.1.1
to be exact), you said that the Lebanese people were "scum",
Mabey i could understand you saying that about 35% of the
Lebanese population, ( which doesnt even seem right), but you
said the Lebanese people were scum. What about all the people
that would just like to live in peace and not be bothered by war
and fighting. is everyone "scum" as you put it. Im sure you dont
think everone is...
I would really like you to respond to this. Tell me what you think.
If i am wrong about anything I said, correct me, but I would really like to
read your oppinon. Thank you for continuing to debate against me.
The Lebanese people are a beautiful and strong people. They will have the will to rebuild. I wish I could help them. Someday I will go to Lebanon and see Beirut and the mountains of Lebanon covered with snow and lovely cedars.
Someone answer this, When this war is over, will Solidere continue with what they were doing before all of this started. Also, Has the central district of beirut been badly damaged.
Who ever reads this please answere these questions ( if they know the answers ) I am really in the dark about what is happening. the US media isn't giving me enough information, I would like to know what is really hapening with beirut and how the citizens of lebanon are taking this.
Your friend, DJ -I am praying for all of you in Lebanon...
Yes Julie...BBC is the place for news that isnt so tainted. ( referring to CNN and Fox News) In Canada, I also find the CBC news to be a little more unbiased than american channels as well.
I was a CNN junkie until this latest conflict. My stance has always been more pro-Arab, even though I refuse to be told I am "anit semitic". I have always been more than a little uncomfortable with the wests unconditonal support of Israel. It has take this invasion and bombardment of Lebanon, for me to realize that I am feeding my brain garbage by watching CNN. No more.
Reports are comming in that we in the US has given Israel some of our Precision Munitions.
Before you guy's start bashing the US for supporting Israel Hear this:
We are giving them these weapons in hopes that they help reduce civilian cassualties.
All of you know we have bombed Iraqi citys to hell and back with these with little to no civillian casualties or colateral damage.
So we're supposed to be thankful because the US is giving Israel more bombs so they can kill us? Obviously you've been nowhere near a war and you belive everything military analysts say on CNN. War is never as clean as the US media shows it. Precision munitions will still kill innocent civilians because when Israel is targeting civilian buildings full of innocent civilians the outcome is the same with or without the use of the precious and much appreciated gift from your gouvement.
Anonymous - do you ever listen to yourself talk? We are giving arms to stop killing civilians? That makes no sense. We bombed Iraq with little or no collateral damage? Where do you get your information from, Fox? Baaaaa little sheep. I think you drank the Kool-Aid. Perhaps if you watched BBC news for a while it woyld act as an antidote.
i love the subtle contrasts in your pictures, and in the structuring of your blog. its really tough though, going through it, from the posts a few weeks ago and then the ones after the 14th. still, as we see from this last set of pics, beirut goes on, endures, resists in this mundane way: going out for a drink, going out on the streets, living everyday life. wishing for the best, although its hard to expect it. a friend from another somewhat devastated city.
it makes me sad to be an American during these days for their un-fettered support of Isreal. And we claim to be a human rights country. Such a disgrace.
They can kill our bodies but we'll always have our souls... Thanx for these pictures, they show us that in the middle of dessolation there are, forever, live.
your site is great. very imformative, and sheds a new light on a situation that tends to get skewed by the newscasters here in america. i will direct everyone i know to your site to get a fresh look at this situation. thank you!
You are not Lebanese. No Lebanese would right this while his/her country is being destroyed by an act of terror and evil and killing of innocent children. So, nice try but grow up.
To "God bless Texas",
The little toe of ANY of our elected officials in Lebanon has more brains and intelligence than your leader Dubbya. I would give you facts and details to support such statement but you are too stupid to even comprehend it. I am glad you are living in Texas, stay there... you will belong to the govenment of Mexico before long. I am just wondering, how much knoweldge and education you have in regard to the Lebanese government other than what you have been watching on your main stream media (CNN and company)? You may want to gather some knowledge and obtain some education about a subject before you make such statements.
hahahahahahahah! Lahoud's little toe is smarter than Bush! And Nabil Berri's too!? AOUN!? Right you are much too intelligent for me...I definately don't know enough about Lebanese politics to be discussing it with the likes of you.
You must be one of those that says you are from France or Cypres when asked where you are from. That says alot about you. What the heck makes you think I am for Hezballah anyway you idiot? The fact that I think Israel is evil, which is a fact - not hard to see if your brains work, doesn't make me for Hezbollah. I am for peace and freedom. I am against all act of terror be it made in Israel, Iran, Syria or the USA. Do you even get that or you just simply too stupid and closed minded to even comprehend such statement? See the thing is you don't have to be on this side or that side. You can actually have your own opinion... the prerequest here is to have brains though, which would the chllange in your case. Now go and tell some one that you are from France and your Mom or Grandmother is Lebanese and follow that statement with a "but". I know your kind very well. You are a discrase to the Lebanese people so please keep telling people you are from France.
Long Live Lebanon... God bless all those that are for peace....
is that all you found to answer?
khalas u already said that, find some new arguments ya neandertal
1+1=2 but try to go beyond
by the way, quoting u: "you don't even know who Carl Rove is... this is the guy
by the way that runs our country.. USA... "
so keep ur lessons of nationalisme for urself.. when i talk about the scum
we are, i think of you first!
The problem since the beginning of mankind is we don't know what to do with ourselves, our collective aggression, our innate desire to destroy something, anything, including ourselves. There is nothing new about this conflict, its the same old story. People will never learn. It's only when real bloodshed occurs that we are temporarily awakened out of our slumber and our prehistoric thinking. And even then, common sense never lasts. If one looks beyond all the phoney ideology, all the misplaced loyalties, all the fictional brainwashed patriotism that says, "long live Israel," "long live Palestine," "long live Hezbollah," "long live America," there remains only a blinding ignorance about why we are here on this planet, what God or Muhammad or Buddha or whoever brought us here for, which is to appreciate life, not murder or revenge, to appreciate beauty, not destruction. Without this realization, everything else is just a senseless waste of time. The function of politicians is to perpetuate this fiction, and we, the human race, continue to suck it up like good booze. It's like a bad dream that never ends.
