We found Beirut for ourselves last year on our travels. We loved Beirut and the Lebanese people and visited again in May. I have been following this blog, your photos and the media coverage since last week. We made a very good friend who owns a bar in Gemmayze - so your photos are very poignant to us. I wish I could do something to help - I think a lot of people feel helpless with the situation and I can only imagine how Lebanon is feeling right now. If there is anything we can help with we will. We will visit again soon regardless of the situation and when I do I will buy you many a beer. Take Care.
Fantastic blog. I saw it mentioned on CNN here in the United States. Please know there are millions of Americans who are not viewing this from the Israeli side. I know I'm not alone in actively seeking out all perspectives to this crisis instead of accepting what our national media is feeding us.
It's frustrating that aggression continues to flare up in your region of the world. Peace should be the ultimate goal on all sides, and sadly it never seems like it is. Life is so short, I wish the obviously complicated issues with deep historical roots could somehow evaporate and all could move forward in sincere peace. Instead, aggression plants more seeds of resentment and hate and the cycle never continues. Isn't there someone intelligent enough to move us past these barbaric attitudes and actions.
What we need is moderate people on both sides of this conflict and all around the world to step up and take control of this situation and stop the madness. Lebanon is a beautiful country, the lebanese people are unique in their ingenuity, caracter, love of life, tolerance and ability to rebound and rebuild. We have already rebuilt this country several times and we will do it again, nothing will stop us. We will not allow the ideologic non-sense of hezbollah, israel, syria and iran to ruin our country. This is a proxy-war, like all the previous wars in Lebanon, and the country is taken hostage and its citizens are being massacred.
Finkployd, it looks to me as if you live in Broummana. I'm from Roumieh, I live in the US currently and I've been an avid follower of your blog for a long time. Great job in general and especially on the war coverage. Your blog is a good remedy for me when I get home sick, especially when you have pictures from roumieh and Broummana, it's where I lived most of my life. Peace, stay safe and keep up the good work.

Generalization is the pinnacle of ignorance. Do you realize that you just called millions of people ignorants and uneducated. People that are backed by thousands of years of culture. You might be referring to religious extremists who might be ignorant but you sure can't generalize that on hundreds of millions. Can I ask you about your educational level, Mr Ripton? what about the number of languages you speek? parlez vous francais par example? I'm pretty sure I am more educated than you are, along with a large portion of arabs and I will never allow you to call me ignorant or uneducated. I don't have to explain my education to you of no significance. The Palestinians were once the educators of the middle east and have converted themselves into terrorists. Lebanon was known as the Paris of the middle East and they too have converted into terrorists. If you are as educated as you claim why arn't you in the lebanese army trying to eradicate yourselves of the cancer in the south known as hizballah.

Well Ripton, I'm not in the army fighting because I'm a pacifist and because I spend my time trying to discover new cures for cancer that would benefit everyone, israelis, arabs, chinese, indians, europeans, africans........ from all religions too. By the way, I'm a lebanese christian arab and my PhD advisor was a jewish american and we are best friends in the world. Let's stop the meaningless rhetoric. I don't want to push Israel to the sea at all, I just want to live in peace and my country to live in peace. I want to see israelis and palestinians living in two states, in peace side by side (I agree to the fact that palestinians should have agrees to the 2 state solution back in 48, imagine all the trouble that would have saved everyone). By the way Ripton, I forgot to mention in my previous response but I agree with you on one point. I wish Lebanon is sent back to the 5th century, you see, back then Beirut was one of the major cities of the roman empire, it was called Colonia Julia Augusta Felix Berytus, it was the ultimate center for knowledge and law, the alma mater of all roma intellectuals. The most famous law school in the roman world those days was the beirut school of law and all the laws you are proud of in your country originated in Beirut. What you don't understand and what extremists like you don't understand is that beirut and Lebanon have always been a beacon for knowledge and culture and humanity so it doesn't matter to what century you want to bomb us back to we can find comfort in our long history of culture. We've been bombed into oblivon and occupied by numerous countries and armies and we always manage to rise from the ashes and conquer the world again with our culture, our knowledge, our personnality, our tolerance and our diversity.

Even though I'm in Asia, I've started blogging about it too. I was hoping it would be a day or two of madness, but when people are fleeing Lebanon en masse it must stop and a way to settle this must be found. Peace.

Can you co-exist with someone who thinks their purpose in life is to kill you? I am not speaking of Lebanese people - I think they can and want to live in peace with Israel (as is evident by the past 6 years), however they obviously lack the courage to stand up to the true invaders of their country - Hezbollah.
Ask yourself this - did Hezbollah ask the permission of the Lebonese government before carrying out a military action against Lebanon's neighbour? This organizaton has hijacked your country and plunged it into war. If the Lebonese people support this - then they support ongoing war, so stop asking for peace.

Being born in Lebanon and residing in Canada all my life it deeply sadens me to see this destruction taking place in one of the most beautiful countries in the world, its prominence continually being stolen...when will be people of Lebanon be freed of the constant suffering at the hands of a never ending war...I am pleased this site is able to attract conscious American's that can differ between the Isreal fed American media and read between the lines...this is obviously an act of terror on the Lebanese people, but yet fed to the public as a "retaliation" or "defensive" act to Hez kidnapping...LET'S join together and REALIZE, the REAL-LIES with REAL-EYES...

I don't know what to say. I am American, but I was born in Beirut. I am not Lebanese by ancestry, my parents were Americans, living there at the time, and they left when I was very young so I have no independent memories of Lebanon but have always heard so much about it from my parents. I've always wanted to go and see the country for myself; now maybe I never will be able to. I am so sad. I am also ashamed that our country and especially our president has not done more (is not doing ANYTHING) to help Lebanon. I am not a Hezbollah sympathizer either, but I do not think their actions justify the "shock and awe" the Israels are visiting on all the Lebanese. I pray for you all. Allah, God, what does it matter? We are all humans. Why do we do these things to each other.

My son and I returned from Lebanon on June 27 after the most wonderful visit with friends and our family who we had not seen in 5 years. I am American and my husband is Lebanese. Life has gotten too hectic here in the U.S. to enjoy the simple pleasures in life. I walked in gardens and grape vineyards,I stopped to smell the jasmin and gardenia bushes and my son spent time with the "shabab" they played cards even when the electricity was out. When they had electricity they watched the world cup, they shared stories and laughed until they almost cried. I want to thank every member of my family in Lebanon, from Beirut to the mountains for this lovely experience and hopefully we will all be together once again. To those on duty fighting the fires from the bombs, to those who are setting up shelters to house the people who no longer have towns, let alone homes and especially to my mother in law who has opened her door and gave blood, I am proud of all of you. And for those family members who are waiting to be evacuated, I pray for your safe return. Life is precious, life is short, we work to hard, we as americans are missing out on alot. Destroying a country is a shame. Thank you for the pictures you are all sending to this site. I was watching cnn and logged on and I am glad I did.

Just to send our love and support to all lebanese people from the lebanese community in Mexico City...my grandparents were lebanese and I was flying to Beirut next friday, obviously I had to cancel my trip...I was meeting my grandfather's sister (93 years old), but it was impossible. Now she's in the hospital, she had a stroke caused by bombs and sadness, and because war is tearing apart her family once again...Actions against Hezbollah MAY be justifiable, but NEVER the massacres against innocent civilians. Our support to you all...by the way, we will protesting against bombings, violence and civilian casualties in Lebanon outside UN headquarters in Mexico City this Thursday.
I am Australian of Lebanese heritage. I was last in Beirut only 2 months ago, and came away genuinely positive about Lebanon's future -sure, the driving was still appalling, petty corruption endemic and low level chaos more or less permanent, but, as my mum reminds me, that IS normal in Lebanon! Thus the timing of this fresh orgy of destruction is just heartbreaking.
I'm not naive enough to think that violence can always be avoided, and I certainly have no affection for the likes of Hizbollah. But I dont follow how blowing things up could successfully wipe out an outfit of extremist guerillas who are externally funded and feed on the hate generated by Israel's various military exploits in Lebanon. The Israelis can't kill every shi'ite or Hizbollah sympathiser in Lebanon, and those left post-war are going to be all the more willing to throw themselves into the cause, with fresh Syrian dollars and Iranian rockets to help them kick along the cycle of violence. History tells us that sooner or later, only a negotiated settlement will be effective. So why not sooner, sparing hundreds of innocent people and winning plaudits all round? For this to happen, other countries (particularly the US, but others woulld help) need to start calling vigorously and publicly for a ceasefire. So far, our (Australian) government is simply saying "Israel has the right to defend itself if the Lebanese government can't control Hizbollah". Fair enough, but this wont help save lives in the short term, and will also feed Arab resentment of the West's double standards. Unfortunately, they're not paranoid. I doubt many countries would assert Australia's right to bomb Jakarta because the Indonesian government plainly can't control Jemaa Islamiyah, a radical islamist group that targets Australians and has killed almost 200 of us in the past few years. To the Lebanese, it often seems that they are damned if they do and damned if they dont. Sooner or later, peace and sense will prevail. Lets hope the international community starts pushing hard and soon for a ceasefire. All our thoughts and prayers are with the civilians suffering through this terrible tragedy. May God be with you and protect you.

I hope and pray it all ends soon and people can live peacefully once again and whatever it takes the sacrifices are great for future generations to come to live without fear and terror. I do not like the killing of civilians. But unfortunately Hezbollah does not agree with me. Why else would they hide in civillian neighborhoods and try to blend in with the people of Beirut? They know that if they are hunted tey are willing to sacrifice the Lebanese people to further their cause. They hide under the lie that they are an organization of God b ut they are willing to sacrifice lives to further their selfish cause of power.
I live ib the US and it is great to live in a free country where you are free to go where you want and do as you want but if people in other lands want to live under a terrorist government or a dictatorship, thery can do that. I don't want to push my way of life on anyone. Does it ever occor to Iran, Syria and Hezbollah that the reason the Western life-style is creaping into their culture is because this is what the people want to do? I do not want war but there is no way to negotiate with people who are willing to kill themselves for Hate. If the leaders of hate groups who hide under the robes of God think it is so good to sacrifice your life to kill other people, they should do it instead of sending young people to do it for them.

regardless of the politics, don't you have a heart and can't you feel for those who are being killed in Lebanon. Homes are being demolished, women and children are either starving, thirsty or their bodies ( or whatever is left of their bodies) are in the streets. Forget who is at fault, please, because those who are not at fault are the only ones suffering. please tell your congressmen and representatives to demand a ceasefire and then we can worry about whose fault it is.
