You might have forgotten that until last year we were under the control of Syria who was nurturing and arming hezbaallah along with Iran. Since we reclaimed our independent decision in 2005 we've been trying to solve this issue and have the gouverment extend its authority to the entire territory while having to resist the destabilisation attempts of both syria and Israel. We cannot cause another civil war in order to disarm hexballah it has to be done peacefully and diplomatically and the current israeli agression is definitely not helping. Only a few months ago our intellectuals and journalists were being assasinated and shredded to pieces by Syria and now the whole country is being destoyed and innocent people killed by Israel. One thing is for sure, over the past decades Lebanon has been destroyed repeatedly by both Syria and Israel who use us as a playground for their wars. Again, Lebanon is destroyed because the interests of both Israel and Syria agree over its destruction.
we've proven to the world time and time again that we are a people like no other in the world and we will rise from the ashes, we will rebuild and we will become the best country in the near east again.
I agree with you completely Ralph. I am an american teen with Lebanese decent, and have been watching news and media to keep myself updated on the issues that have been happening between the Israeli government and Lebanon. Recently I have become very fond of Lebanon and how beautiful it is. Days before Lebanon was attacked by Israel I was trying to get my family to consider letting me go to Lebanon in the near future. Over and over again Lebanon is bullied by its surrounding countries. Mainly Israel and Syria. Why the Israelis can even consider disrupting the peace that Lebanon had, I do not know why. They will not leave the Lebanese people alone and that upsets me. I can understand Israel not wanting to be bombed by Hezbollah, but if they really wanted to solve this problem then tey are doing it the Wrong way. They have killed almost 200 Lebanese citizens and only Few Hezbollah gureillas. Acoording to the news media I am seing on TV, Israel is at war with Hezbollah and not Lebanon. But they way they are going about things is NOT working. If the Israeli government really wants this issue to be fixed, then well... I wish, I just wish that the Israeli government could actually take a look at what they are doing, and realize that the only way to solve this is for them and Lebanon to work together, in peace.
For so much violents to take place in such a beautiful place, it makes me very depressed. Lebanon is beautiful. The rest of the Middle East is like one large desert. And Lebanon with its mountains and beautiful fertile soils and coastlines, is like that deserts oasis.
You are trying to solve this issue...In the meen time, it's our soldiers that are being kidnapped.We have been attacked time and time again since the pull out in 2000.

Hello. I am of Lebanese descent living in the United States of Israel (LOL). I was supposed to be in Beirut in August, just like every year, visiting family and friends...
My parents fled from Beirut during the 1978 war, with me and my brother, clutched in distress and horror. My mother cries every time she watches the news since she remembers all the painful moments when she left everything behind to start a new life all over again... I just have to say that I have become emotionally attached to this country since my first visit 6 years ago during the Christmas-New Year season. We have spent every summer there ever since, and the people, the country, the sites, are just unbelievable. I LOVE Lebanon dearly and it tears my heart to see it wrenched into pieces by villains after the war rebuilding effort. The Israelis are taking revenge after the 2000 pullout since they weren't able to defeat Hezbollah back then. They are literally bringing the country to its knees (because of their enlarged ego), and everyone is just wondering when the death, destruction and displacement is going to stop. What are they proving to the world? The world is turning against them even more because of the unbalanced nature of their efforts- turning their operation of rescuing two captured Israeli soldiers into a massacre instead. Or, is this just an excuse to enlarge their territory even further, chew up part of south Lebanon as their own? Who knows what the terror known as Israel has planned, and it did not take them long enough to enter into this fledging country, unawares, and blow away the normalcy that people started feeling after long decades of war. I just want to applaud the efforts of finkployd, named after my favorite band, pink floyd, for giving people around the world a chance to actually 'feel' the sights of war in progress. I am sure it is nothing like being on the battleground, unfortunately, and we thank you for reaching out into the world and communicating with everybody else. This is a great documentary effort, and all our prayers will be with you and God bless Lebanon!!

ofir i take great offense to what you have said... israel terrorized... i dont understand .do you mean about the billions of dollar the u.s gives to israel each year .. Dear Ofir, My heart hurts and is with you and the Lebanese. I am American and do not agree with my countries support or funding of Isreal. I have put out request to meet with my representatives. I have spoken with their assisstants and asked that they find compassion in their hearts and stop this alliance with Isreal. I have asked that they meet for an immediate cease fire. They owe this tax payer ~ my mother n laws home/business was destroyed with bombs funded by me a tax payer. I want you to know the wise and compassionant Americans are really questioning this. The ignorant are saying Israel must do this. I love Lebanon so much and will do whatever I can to help you have a peace forever. I don't agree with Hezbollah, on any level, they did not have the right to cross the blue line and attack the patrol. At the same time I cannot agree with the murderous, indiscriminate israeli response. Hundreds of innocent civilians have been killed so far, many of them children, the country is being systemically destroyed and 7 days later hizbollah is still sending hundreds of rockets on Israel. Obviously the plan of the israeli gouverment is not working when it comes to disabling hizbollah, it is working perfectly in destroying the country and killig its people though. I think Peretz and Olmert who have next to no military skills and glory between them are trying to gain credibility on military and security issues by blowing lebanon into pieces. That's not to say that I don't blame hizballah for starting this and making lebanon a strategic bargaining ship in the hands of the iranian ayatollahs and the syrian baas regime (by the way what's happening fullfills a promise assad made to late rafic hariri before he was assassinated that if he gets out of lebanon he'll brake it on our heads. He's doing it through Israel again). Ofir, you ask me what is israel supposed to do, a more logical thing would have been to withdraw from the chebaa farms and release lebanese prisoners, at a cost near to zero excepts in terms of pride, which would eliminate the aliby for the existence of hezbollahs arms and would have made it much easier for the lebanese gouverment to disarm him. The bigger solution of course would be the one to the main problem that of the palestinian people. The palestinians have the right to a souvereign state and to a decent life. They have been living under the most hprrible of conditions and are being killed every day by Israel. That does not justify some of them blowing themselves up in buses and killing innocent civilians but as we've all seen for generations now, violence generates violence and hatred generates hatred. The only solution is peace, diplomacy and moderacy.
On the issue of the money the us gives israel, though substantial, I think israel no longer needs that money. The problem we arabs have had is dwelling too much on the past, playing victims and crying over our losses and our past glories while the rest of the world is passing by. Israel now has the biggest generic drug company in the world (I know that because I work in the cancer drug development field), they have high tech research centers that people compare to silicone valley and where every major biotech and high tech company has research facilities, they've been developing tremendously over the decades and what have we arabs been doing? Where is all the money we make from selling oil going? we've been bogged down in our quagmires of oppressive regimes and relegious extrmisms. I am lebanese and can't be prouder of it and I think lebanon is the only country that can pull the arab world from its current state of coma and into the twenty first centurie and that's why all the countrie in the region, each for its own reasons and agenda, do their best to keep us down and to destroy us but as we've done before, we always come back. I will quote a lebanese journalist, Samir Kassir, who was assassinated by syria last year who titles one of his articles: "Beirut is the spring of arabs", beirut will remain the spring of arabs, the spring of the whole middle east and despite the latest Israeli agression and the syrian assassinations that preceeded it, beirut and lebanon shall overcome.

Im not from israel, palestine, lebanon... Im from spain. I have no idea of which kind of information of "brain-washing" you receive from your media about this excuse fo "defenses actions", but I just want to tell you something: Im pacifist, love peace, im against armies, war's and any other kind of violence, but if someone made me live in the conditions you make to live them, it could be perfectly possible that I'll explode my self wherever I could. You must start wonder about how bombing hospital, airports and all the infrastructures of a country, making their citizens poor, dessperates and absolutely full of rencor is going to lead you to peace. Anyway I hope (but have no idea how can be possible) one day you can start feeling safe and in peace. For you, and for your victims.

Dear Zahi - An observation - it was not the two buildings. It was the thousands of people in the two buildings, the hundreds on the three planes, the many who died trying to rescue the victims. Many were not Americans - they were simply well-employed to provide well for themselves and the families they lvoed and who loved them.
Dear Ruth, I greatly understand the outcome of 9-11 in terms of human lives, etc. I felt and still feel terrible for what happens and rest assured that most Arab-Americans were more harmed (emotionally, pysically, economically or otherwise) than anyone else. My point was misunderstood and perhaps I should have been more clear. Of course, it is not about the number of building and it is more about the loss of innocent human life. However, do you really want to count? Let's tale a stab at it shall we? So we, Americans, lost a lot of people in 9-11 and it was an attacj that was terrible in every way, shape and form. What do we do? Attack and wipe out two COUNTRIES and 10s of thousands of their population (Afgan., and Iraq). Now, we unleash Israel to distroy another country with its innocnet people and while you are at it Israel, see if you can pull Syria into it by attacking the border. Yes, the USA approved all this terrorist attack by Israel. Israel would never dare to do such thing without having this fully planned and approved by the USA well in advance. The shame is that American people would never learn about the acts of their gov't and the full support of a terror nation - Israel. Thanks in big part to a main stream media owned and fully operated by the radical jews. I wish we would all get over everything and start living a peaceful life. I thank you for conversing with me without some of the viciousness that is easy to erupt in these times. Uh, Larry, I am one of those Crazies who believe in the Book of Revelations (and Daniel, Ezekiel...) - LOL..sorry. And many of us are really really really not feeling like Pres. Bush is on our side either at times!!! (ok ok - I didn't vote for him..there...) Point of clarification that has nothing to do with the war - I don't believe that all Jews need to be in Israel for Armageddon, nor am I anxiously waiting for it. im... I apologize sincerely if it sounded like I was supportive of people being killed. I feel very badly for the innocents who are dying, being injured, losing their homes, or even those "only" affected because their countries are being torn up. I know that all the Lebanese are not to blame and certainly don't! i would prefer that none die, but I learned long ago that once people start fighting it's going to be the end result. Zahi, my personal opinion is that you are right - Israel has used this situation with their soldiers as a means of making a point and going after Hezbollah. I believe that they do have a right to protect themselves against Hezbollah (I know - many of us are on opposite sides of that. i'm not sure there is a way to know which of us is actually "right") but I also have problems with the bombing of areas not KNOWN to be used by Hezbolla. I am equally unimpressed with those short range bombs - can't spell the name - that are not guided and land pretty much wherever they land rather than being able to be targeted with some accuracy. (How sad that war ends up talking accuracy and scores and loses track of the human element.) Larry - just as an aside...I have never ever heard anything from any Christian leader attempting to ushure in Armageddon. I AM familiar with "even so Lord Jesus, come quickly" but I have always understood that more as a plea for Jesus to save the speaker from a specific circumstance...as in Lord, come get me out of this mess. I find it interesting that when I was going over some Muslim writings and listening to reports about the Iranian leader (I'm sorry, I'm tired and cant' think of his correct title) and what I read and heard from the sources was that the Muslims are looking for the Mahdi - which is the "other side's" position of Armageddon. HE is the one attempting to usher in the Mahdi's return, which just may trigger Armageddon.... I am not trying to start a religious debate here...just an observation. and lest someone misunderstand anything I've said, which is easy to do in emotionally charged events, I teach in public school. I have had Muslim students, they were great kids, they had good families, they were respectful (albeit a bit disdainful) of their classmates' beliefs. In fact, one of my student's father was an active supporter of the downfall of America and she agreed with him. As for watching too much cnn...even with satellite, I AM a bit limited!! I know Fox promotes itself as fair and balanced. I haven't found them to be anything but arguementative, inciting, and very irritating. Indeed, it sounded to me like one of the reporters was trying to start WWIII on his own!! I"m between cnn and msnbc..and yes, I know both are slanted. As are the arab networks. A reality of life is that you are always, naturally slanted towards the side you believe to be correct. I do read between the lines, I don't believe everything I hear. And one of the reasons I came here after seeing the site on cnn was to hear what others are thinking - particularly those in the affected areas. I applaud, and again thank, all of you for talking with me, expressing your opinions and disagreements with me in a respectful but honest way. I have grown up with the Middle East disagreements being a serious sidelight of all times. I respect people for faithfully following what they believe, whether I believe it or not. I don't think anyone is right or wrong all the time. I do believe that these sorts of discussions, between different nationalities and religions, bring a human face to the issues, help to cut down generalizations and bigotry, and make us realize that while fights are ideological, politcal, financial, selfish, whatever, it is people who in the end do the suffering. I do believe that the majority of the Lebanese people as well as the majority of Israelis are innocent victims here, and I am hoping that this all ends soon and that the countries of the world (at the very least the G8, Israel, and Arab countries) work together to rebuild Lebanon and restore damaged areas of Israel quickly. This right wing Christian is praying for both sides. (sorry Larry - you made me laugh. I've been called a lot of things in my life, but that was the first time I've been called "right wing". You just took me off guard.) May peace come quickly.

Diplomacy and moderation, sadly, as someone has said leads nowhere when dealing with people like Hezbollah, Bin Laden, etc. Israel, if they really wanted to could uttlerly and completely destroy Lebanon within about 5 minutes if the "destrucion of LEbanon" was their ultimate goal.. That's a fact, not just hyperbole. It is painful to me to see civilians killed. It enrages me to know that Arab Hezbollah cowards would place their military equipment and "brave fighters" near or in civilian locations. I saw a pic online yesterday of a Hamas member in the middle of the street, holding a baby, preparing to fire an RPG! Everything considered, I think the IDF has shown commendable restraint. Not perfect....because afterall this is warfare...not some video game. innocents always have and always will die in war. Hezbollah would NEVER have left Lebanon, to believe that is living in a fantasy world. The LEbanese Army would never have expelled them. Bottom line, this was going to happen sooner later. Bottom line again, unless Hezbollah is completely and disgustingly destroyed, it WILL happen again. For Hezbollan and some Arab radicals to believe that someday they will push Israel into the Sea is also a dream of someone smoking Marijuana! Withoud doubt, Israel would destroy every hostile Arab (or Persian) country completely if they were to ever try this. One Israeli leader said one time that Israel would "bring the curtain down on mankind of the region" before they would endure another holocaust! So my Lebanese friends, put the blame squarely where it is. What is happening now WOULD NOT be happening if were not for Hezbollah. And even now, Hezbollan could stop it......release the 2 soldiers, and allow the LEbanese Army to enter and control the South. But they won't and never would do this. So, seems to me like the only solution is their eradication by the IDF. Negotion, moderation, talking.....would work with normal governments perhaps....but it is foolhardy to think it would with Hezbollah. I really do wish there was some other way.....but in all reality, there just not. Keep your head and shoulders low.......
Carlos, thank you for reminding us of the tremendous, and scary, military capabilities of Israel. I have no doubt that they can erase lebanon and its people off the map in 5 minutes as you so graciously point out. But that's a very poor argument when it comes to justifying the israeli agression. Your logic goes: "we can totally annihilate you and since we're only destroying you then we're not doing it on purpose". This is as poor an argument as it can get. It's exactly this kind of thinkink that is leading the region and the world to such conflicts. Listen, the whole world agrees (except for some comic iranians and the odd revisionists), including the overwhelming majority of arabs that the holocauste was the most criminal, inhumane episode in the history of the world, but so was slavery and the annihilation of the native americans by the US "the land of the free". That doesn't give anyone the right to kill others just because of the tragedies they suffered in their past. You should not foget that arabs and jews lived side by side in the same land peacfully for centuries (it's odd how everybody seems to forget that). The jewish people have suffered a lot over the centuries but the time of "massada" is long gone, israel is the imperialist power in the area that is subjecting others to all kinds of injustices. So let's stop playing the role of the eternal victim here so please, please lets not repeat massada and detroy the region on everybodies head, like the israeli leader you quoted so graciously wanted to do.
Let's hope one day we'll have peace and we can discuss all these issues face to face over a drink in beirut, tel aviv, jerusalem or jounieh.
Just to lay the groundwork, I intend no offense, I am merely joining the conversation. Thank you for providing that forum. I am a Christian American. I happen to agree with (most) of America's support of Israel. I do understand that it is NOT Lebannon that has attacked Israel, but it is the Lebannonese people who are suffering on that side (Israelis are suffering also, but granted not to the same extent). However Hezbollah is part of the Lebanese government. I'm sorry, I'm not familiar with the structure of your government. But that segment of the government, in my opinion, makes the Lebanese government partially responsible for the events now taking place, but NOT the people who are not supporters of Hezbollah. Again, in my opinion, it is Hezbollah, Hamas, the Lebanese government, and the citizens who support Hezbollah who are responsible. I strongly suspect Syria and Iran, but at least they have staid out of the actual fighting. Hoping for cease-fire, peace, and a rebuilding of Lebanon. I'm praying for both sides.

It is extremely critical now that we stay united in the face of the terror machine Israel. Don't get me wrong, I think Hezbollah was wrong in what they did. However, we all know, what is taking place now in Lebanon has nothing to do with the two soldiers. This was planned long time ago. Israel would love nothing better now that to start a civil war in Lebanon. We should not be foolish again to fall in the traps of Israel, Syria and the like and kill each other like we have in the past. After all, this is Iran and Syria fighting Israel and the US on our land. We just happen to be a convenient and useful battlefield. No one cares what happens to Lebanese people, not the Arab nations, not the US, and not even Europe. All we have is each other.
