Photo  someone should chronicle their invasion and current occupation their numbers are in the hundreds cats carry, spread, and transmit toxoplasmosis, a lethal parasitic disease... with such a large population growing, breeding, eating, excreting, and mixing with the students... something's eventually gonna give. or maybe it has already. Toxoplasmosis is a parasitic disease caused by the parasite Toxoplasma gondii. It infects most animals and causes human parasitic diseases, but the primary host is the felid (cat) family. Cats get infected by eating infected rats. Rats get infected by accidentally absorbing cat faeces. The parasite subtly alters the rat's behavior. The comments on this pictures are extremely alarmists and blown way out of proportion. The probability of contracting toxoplasmosis from these cats while walking around the AUB campus is extremely minute, that's assuming that any of these cats actually carry it. You're way more likely getting hit by a car while crossing bliss street. I think they add some character an charm to the campus and there's no need for hollywood style "outbreak scenarios".

I always check your site and love your pics but wanted to say that I strongly disagree with you on this one. Every day, you see dead cats on the streets ...run over by speeding cars, as a result of complete negligence and indifference towards the hundreds of "homeless" cats. For once I am glad that there is a policy meant to keep these cats away from the streets and that has given them a safe shelter…when it comes to animal rights or anything even remotely “politically correct”, I must say that Lebanon is the farthest thing from being politically correct.

i advise you to do some reading on toxoplasmosis @ wikipedia. there are two points worthy of note: - over 1/3rd of the world population has or has had toxoplasmosis - latent toxoplasmosis increases your psychomotor reaction time by roughly 2.5 times i personally am a big fan of cats. i even have one at home. however, we're not talking about a few cats here, we're talking about hundreds, and no matter how far away you stay from them, their sheer numbers, trawling on the likes of the green oval, must have some contribution to the toxoplasmosis infections on campus. considering there is an aub group dedicated to helping and protecting the cats, and that this group gets funding, would it not be equally appropriate, and possibly more so, to get some funding to people interested in studying the prevelance of toxoplasmosis amongst the cats, and conduct environmental and health analyses of the possibility of students acquiring this through 'normal' behavior on campus.
It's all about balance.
The main advantage of having cats on the AUB campus is to limit the population of rats. And we all know how well these little bastards carry and spread filthy viruses. However, it would defeat this purpose to actually feed the cats ourselves. In fact, they are fed every day around 5pm with leftovers from the campus cafeterias. So in my opinion, it shouldn't be about animal rights (what about rats?) as much as it should be about defining their functionality and preserving a useful balance. PS: finkployd, love your pics!
