The CEO of one of the largest institutions in Lebanon recently told me, "give Lebanon 3 consecutive years of stability and she will return to her former glory... we're in year 2".
I am not sure if it's the Lebanese soil in which anything grows, or the Lebanese people who make everyone feel at home, but I can assure you, something brings the boys back home every time there's a little peace and quiet.
And so, in light of the relative calm, the idea of a Beirut Media City resurfaces - in different hands - to a rare optimistic buzz. Reporters are clamoring to cover the story of transforming Beirut into yet another media hub. (see bottom)
We had our first 'brainstorming' session last week, the Lebanese Entrepreneurs, the curious and the fillers, to discuss the possibility of forming a Beirut Media City.

The general consensus was that we were not out to replicate the Dubai Media City model (money to burn), but rather to define our own model based on a patched version of the Silicon Valley organic model: co-locate a couple of warehouses to shelter budding brains and consolidate infrastructure costs / maintenance; then wait and watch as companies and organization sprout around the warehouses to tap into the intellectual resources within.
And so, before parting ways, we agreed to regroup twice a month, each meeting hosted at the offices of a willing / capable Lebanese startup, to strengthen our bonds, and eventually develop a sense of community that will slot into whatever warehouse manifests.
This 'community' may even succeed in weathering the frequent storms that roll through our mountains.
