Beirut Lockdown: Early Morning

it's 7:15 AM February 14, 2007

just came back from a cruise around beirut (military pass)

all roads going into downtown are barricaded.

it's just like that day the opposition called a general strike...

I'm finding it difficult differentiating today's Government Beirut Lockdown to the Opposition's Beirut Lockdown.

Its importnat to note that theres a difference between the army blocking a road and a bunch of hooligans and instigators doing it.

there are HUGE differences between the Black Tuesday of the opposition and today's event.

We didn't burn tires, we didn't close streets, we didn't force people to join us, and we didn't warn people NOT to go to their work. We were civilized, and we showed everybody how you can be a real majority, without risking the stability of the country.

this post was a reflection on the lockdown, not how it took place.

it has been confirmed that there were instigators in the government camp during the General Strike, which led to many of the conflicts:
- the Mustaqbal militia
- Geagea telling his supporters to take the law into their own hands and open the streets at all costs

So if today was peaceful that might have a lot to do with the lack of instigators in the Opposition camp - perhaps a greater willingness to resolve this peacefully on the side of the Opposition.
